Located on the northern edge of Tübingen, the Waldhäuser Ost district is a residential ensemble from the 1970s that is currently undergoing a sensitive transformation as part of a new urban development framework. The design proposes selective additions as well as the renovation and expansion of selected existing buildings – with the goal of creating contemporary living spaces while preserving the original structures. The transformation of the first residential building is being carried out through minimally invasive interventions. Existing apartments are reconfigured with open, modern layouts and extended by approximately 10 m². Spacious loggias or balconies open the apartments to the south. In addition, twelve new residential units are being created through a one- to two-story rooftop extension.

The extension follows a timber-hybrid construction method: a structure of wooden beams and slender columns allows for minimal material use, and due to the low weight of the components, the existing foundations do not require reinforcement.

The lightweight, prefabricated timber construction is adaptable and allows for flexible modifications in the future. The façades are entirely clad in wood, featuring wood-aluminum windows and highly insulating wood fiber insulation. On the south side, the interplay of loggias and balconies creates a dynamic sense of depth, while the north side is articulated by protruding stair cores and annexes.

The wooden cladding gains a distinctive character through its durable, color-treated finish, which preserves and ages well over time. The outdoor areas connect seamlessly with the surrounding green spaces and offer shared areas that provide room for recreation and neighborhood interaction. Residents also have access to terrace areas on the green roofs.

By preserving as much of the existing structure as possible and using a resource-efficient material concept, this project creates housing that, thanks to its flexible construction, can continue to adapt to changing needs in the future.
