Our office, together with Studio Gang, has been selected as a winning team in the international competition to redesign German House in New York. Located at United Nations Plaza, the building is home to the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations, and their affiliated cultural partners.

Rather than building anew, our design transforms the existing tower: a comprehensive renovation that reduces embodied carbon while significantly improving both the fabric of the building and the comfort of staff and visitors. A newly designed, colored façade with building-integrated photovoltaics generates renewable energy on site, and a box-window system combines high-performance solar shading with preserved views and natural ventilation. At mid-tower, a sky lobby with a vertical garden creates a shared realm for work and encounter; at the top, a new restaurant spanning two floors opens onto a roof terrace with panoramic views across the city and the East River.

sauerbruch hutton serves as Lead Designer, with Studio Gang as General Planner and Architect of Record, leading the project's delivery on site. German House is the first joint project between the two practices – and sauerbruch hutton's first in the United States.

The competition jury praised the proposal for representing the Federal Republic of Germany in New York and at the United Nations "through an architecture that is original, optimistic, transparent, and accessible, fully aware of the role this building plays within this context."
